Vertical Millstone
Two millstones are set in this machine vertically. The grain is normally placed into the hopper which funnels the grain into the grinding stones.

The metal funnel on top of the millstones is called a hopper. The grain is then chuted into the hopper. The hopper allows the grain to be channeled into the grinding millstones. |
|
Typical Horizontal Mill Stone.
Metamora Mill grinds their grains during season and sells them in their gift shop. There are two horizontal mill stones. The top millstone is the runner and the bottom stone is called the bed stone. |
|
The wooden cover (cap) protects the mill stones.
The funnel on top of the mill stones is a hopper. The hopper allows the grain to funnel down into the center of the stones. As the stones start to grind, the grain becomes smaller and smaller and then it is pushed out on the outside of the mill stones. The ground grain is then channeled to the funnel and into the conatainer.
The ground grain is then measured and bagged to be be sold in the gift shop. |

The crane has an upright pillar, with a large swing bracket or beam. From the end of the bracket there is an iron screw that is attached to two iron arms or bales. Each of the arms terminates with a hook or pin. The two hooks are inserted into holes on the opposite side of the runner millstone. When the mill stone is lifted, the hook and stone are symmetrically balanced. Then the stone is flipped face up to be sharpened and dressed. |

When the Leffel Turbine was installed in the mill, this wheel was used to open and close the sluice gate. When the sluice gate was open the water flowed down onto the turbine and powered the mill. When the wheel closed the sluice gate the turbine stopped and production of the mill ceased. |
